About Bret Afdahl
Bret was appointed Director of the South Dakota Division of Banking in May 2011. Prior to accepting the role of Director, Bret was counsel to the Division of Banking from October 2006 until May 2011 and worked on wide variety of regulatory issues affecting state chartered banks, trust companies and licensees in South Dakota.
In addition to his duties as counsel to the Division, Bret participated in fiduciary examinations of trust companies and bank trust departments chartered in South Dakota and remains an active participant in the Governor's Task Force on Trust Administration Review and Reform, which meets annually to discuss and implement amendments to South Dakota trust law. Prior to joining the Division, Bret worked on the legal staff at the South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation on a variety of tax and compliance issues.
Bret is a 1999 graduate of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota with a degree in political science and business and is a 2003 graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Law.
Bret also holds certification as a Fiduciary and Investment Risk Specialist (CFIRS) from the CANNON Financial Institute and will complete the American Banking Association Graduate School of Trust in October 2011.
Bret is married to Melissa and has two young and energetic boys who both love the outdoors. Bret is an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He also holds a special place in his heart for all of our country's service members, past and present, for all they have done, are doing and will continue to do to keep this country the best in the world.
