Title - South Dakota Cosmetology Commission

Electric File & Microdermabrasion Education

The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission requires education prior to using a microdermabrasion machine or electric nail file. These are one-time educational requirements. Documentation must be sent to the Commission immediately upon completion of any course. A $35 verification fee must be paid by the licensee to the Commission if the education provider is not approved by the Commission. The providers on the list below are approved providers for South Dakota licensees, so the licensee does not have to pay the $35 verification fee to the Commission.

  • Microdermabrasion (closed-loop system) requires 16 hours and must be completed before starting microdermabrasion services.
  • Electric files require eight hours and must complete the electric file course before using the electric file.
  • If a licensee does not complete the education requirement and continues the service, the license may be suspended or revoked.
  • The Commission is not responsible for any course dates, rescheduled courses, cancelled courses or fees paid to the provider.
