Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Employment and Training Program (E & T Program)

When you apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), you start at your local South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) office. DSS decides who is eligible for SNAP.

If you are considered able to work, you must also register with the Department of Labor and Regulation (DLR) and cooperate with your local DLR Employment and Training (E & T) representative as you look for and then keep a job.

You will be expected to do at least one of the following activities.

  • Job search
  • Job Search Assistance Program (JSAP)
  • Community Worksite Employment Program
  • GEDĀ® or secondary education opportunities
  • Skilled training opportunities

The purpose of the E & T program is to help you find, get and keep a job, so you can go off SNAP.

Failure to cooperate with the E & T representativeā€™s directions may cause you to lose some of your SNAP benefits.

Some people are exempt from the E&T program. However, this decision is made by DSS, not the Department of Labor and Regulation.
