Tips for Finding Summer Employment 2008

One thing nearly all the South Dakota Career Center managers had to say was how important it is to get a jump-start on looking for summer employment. Many employers seeking summer help start their recruiting efforts early in the spring, so those who start their search for summer employment early will be the most successful. In fact, much of the hiring for summer jobs occurs as early as February. Therefore, even during the winter months, it is a good idea to start looking for a summer job. College students who can remain in the area over the summer often have first choice on where they want to work.

Another piece of advice to summer job seekers from the Career Center managers is to stay flexible and not limit their availability. Students with camps, vacations and sports schedules often have a more difficult time securing employment that meets their needs. A positive attitude and being publicly presentable (i.e., no facial piercing or visible tattoos; being dressed appropriately for the interview) are also very important factors in being hired.

Whether you are a first-time job seeker or simply wish to brush up on your job seeking skills, any South Dakota Career Center can offer help on:

·      Completing applications.

·      Writing winning resumes and cover letters.

·      Sharpening your interview skills.

The South Dakota Career Centers also offer information on child labor laws, such as

·      Allowable hours of employment.

·      Minimum wage requirements.

·      Allowable types of employment for specific ages.
