South Dakota Reducing Extended Unemployment Benefits

PIERRE, S.D. -- South Dakota will reduce the total amount of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits paid by 7.2 percent. This adjustment is to meet the federal requirement for fiscal year 2014 sequestration required by the Budget Control Act of 2011.

State Labor and Regulation Secretary Pam Roberts says this reduction does not impact the 26 weeks of state unemployment benefits.

The reduction does affect all claimants filing for EUC benefits beginning the week of Sept. 29, 2013, and ending the week of Dec. 28, 2013. Amended monetary determinations will be sent to approximately 190 affected claimants this week.

Unemployment insurance provides temporary financial assistance for people who have lost their jobs, through no fault of their own, until they find employment. South Dakota's unemployment insurance program is financed by employers through payroll taxes; workers do not contribute to this plan.
