Public Forums Scheduled for Autism Spectrum Disorder Study for Children

PIERRE, S.D. -- Three public forums seeking input on a South Dakota autism study have been scheduled by Health Management Associates, the vendor selected to conduct the study.

Earlier in July the state departments of Human Services and Labor and Regulation selected Health Management Associates to carry out a study on the treatment of autism spectrum disorders for children in South Dakota. Details about the public forums, all of which will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. local time, are as follows:

  • Aug. 19, Rapid City, Ramkota Convention Center Legion 1-2, 2111 N. LaCrosse St.
  • Aug. 20, Pierre, Ramkota Gallery F and G, 920 W. Sioux Ave.
  • Aug. 21, Sioux Falls, Ramkota Amphitheater II, 3200 W. Maple St.

The public forums will offer a chance for families, advocacy groups, legislators, policy leaders and others affected by autism spectrum disorder to provide input. Interested individuals may also provide information via e-mail at autismstudy@state.sd.us. State officials have previously stated that public input will be critical to the success of the study.

The study, prescribed during the 2014 Legislative Session, will analyze the availability and certification of providers, accepted treatments and outcomes, and the costs and benefits of autism services for children as well as the impact of requiring insurance plans to cover the various associated services. A report will be issued to the Governor and Legislature by Nov.15, 2014.

Updates on the study will be posted to autism.sd.gov.
