How will I be notified if I am due to renew my personal license this year?
We will be sending out a mailing at the end of September notifying licensees who are due to renew that they may begin renewing online starting October 1. You can also check your license renewal year by using our Online Licensee Services.
How will I be notified if I am due to renew my firm license this year?
We will be sending out a mailing at the end of September notifying responsible brokers their firm license is due to renew and that they may begin renewing online starting October 1. You can also check your firm license renewal year by using our Online Firm Services.
When will I receive my application?
We no longer provide paper applications. All licensees need to submit their renewal application online by using our Online Licensee Services.
When is my renewal application due?
Applications for renewal are due November 30. All applications received after November 30 through June 30 will be subject to a late fee. Please see Administrative Rule of South Dakota (ARSD) 20:69:03:27.
Can I submit an application on someone’s behalf?
No, applications for renewal must be completed and submitted by the individual licensee. It is the responsibility of the licensee to complete the application and submit payment by the renewal deadline.
How long do I have to renew my license?
Any licensee who does not submit the renewal application by January 1 will be placed on a non-renewal status and will have until June 30 to complete the renewal application. As of July 1 if a licensee has not completed the renewal application, the license will become invalid and will no longer be eligible for renewal. Renewal applications received from December 1 through June 30 will be subject to late fees.
I did not renew my license by the June 30 deadline. What are my options?
You will need to begin the licensing process, starting with attending a pre-licensing course. You will then need to take the examinations and go through the licensing application process. Please see our Licensing Types and Requirements page for additional details about your specific license.
How soon will I receive my renewed license?
We processes renewal applications in the order in which they are received. Delays can be expected if you have not completed your continuing education requirement or provided proof of your E & O coverage.
How will I receive my license?
You will receive an email with a link to your license. Please be sure to check your spam and junk folders. You may print this copy for your records. Licensees are no longer required to display the license.
I am not going to be active. Do I still need to complete a renewal application?
Yes, licensees who wish to keep their license on an inactive status must submit a renewal application each renewal cycle.
I am not going to be active. Do I still need to complete continuing education?
No, licensees who are on an inactive status are not required to complete the renewal continuing education requirement until they intend on becoming active. Time share agents are not required to provide proof of continuing education to activate their license.

No, licensees who are on an inactive status are not required to provide proof of E & O coverage requirement until they intend on becoming active. Time share agents and home inspectors are not required to provide proof of E & O coverage to activate their license.

What is my login to Personal Licensee Services/Firm License Services?
Details on logging into the Personal License Services site are available at the top of the log-in page. Log-in information for a firm will be included in the mailing sent out to responsible brokers.

I am unable to log into the Online Licensee Services or Online Firm Services. What should I do?

I am on the Invoice page of the renewal system and my status is ‘Pending’ but I am unable to pay for my license.
Your browser may not be the most up-to-date version. You will see two boxes that say ‘Continue to Payment’ and ‘Return to Licensee Form’ if your browser is not the most current version. You will need to update your browser to complete the process. License renewal applications are not complete without a complete payment being received. Incomplete applications will result in a license being placed on a non-renewal status as of January 1. Please visit our Online Renewal Tutorial to view what this page should look like.
Erros and Ommissions (E & O) Insurance
When is my group E & O certificate of coverage due?
Proof of group E & O certificate of coverage is due December 31. All licensees who do not complete this requirement will be placed on inactive status as of January 1 until we receive the required information. Please see Administrative Rule of South Dakota (ARSD) 20:69:15:02.
When is my optional E & O certificate of coverage due?
Proof of optional E & O certificate of coverage is due by the expiration date. All licensees who do not complete this requirement will be placed on inactive status as of the expiration date until we receive the required information. Please see ARSD 20:69:15:02.
How do I submit my E & O payment?
The South Dakota Real Estate Commission is no longer processing group E & O payment. Licensees who are renewing their E & O through the group policy will need to contact the Rice Insurance Services Company (RISC) directly. Please visit the RISC website for more details.
How do I submit my optional E & O certificate of coverage?
There is an option to upload your E & O certificate of coverage in the online renewal process. Please see our Online Renewal Tutorial. You may also submit your certificate by e-mailing it to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line ‘Your Name-Proof of Errors and Omissions Insurance’. Include in the body of the email your license number and contact information.
When is my continuing education due?
Completion of continuing education for renewal is due December 31. All licensees who do not complete this requirement will be placed on inactive status as of January 1 until we receive the required information. Please see South Dakota Codified Law (SDCL) 36-21A-64.

What is my education status? How many hours do I need for renewal?
Licensees can view their education status by logging into our Online Licensee Services and selecting ‘Education Summary’. Your status will be listed at the top of the page. Our list of continuing education requirements can be found on our Continuing and Postlicensing Education Requirements page.
I am reviewing my Education Summary. How many hours of education do I have left to meet my current renewal requirement?
Any continuing education hours completed during the current year and the previous year will count toward your continuing education requirements.
For example, if you are due to renew in 2017, all continuing education completed in 2017 and 2016 will count toward your 2017 renewal.
Can I take extra education hours in the current renewal cycle and apply it to my next renewal?
No, please see SDCL 36-21A-62.
Are there exceptions to continuing education?
Yes, please see ARSD 20:69:11:04.
I have taken a course but it is not showing on my education summary. What is the timeframe for a course to appear?
Course providers are allowed ten days to send a course roster to the SDREC staff. Once it is received SDREC will then upload the class to your education history. Due to our workload please allow two to three weeks before contacting our office.
I am an out-of-state licensee who is actively licensed in my residing state. Do I need to submit a certificate of licensure with my renewal?
Yes, you must submit a certificate of licensure with your application for renewal. Please see our Online Renewal Tutorial for further details on how to submit the certificate of licensure online.
