Health Academies are held the first week in June
on the campuses of the state's four technical institutes as well as at
Avera St. Luke's/Presentation College. High School juniors and
seniors from across the state are able to attend the week-long
academies.
During
the week, the participants have an opportunity to participate in
hands-on activities conducted by the instructors of the various health
programs at Lake Area Technical Institute, Mitchell Technical Institute,
Southeast Technical Institute, Western Dakota Technical Institute and
Avera St. Luke's Hospital/Presentation College. In addition,
speakers from regional hospitals, colleges, and universities participate
in the academy. With the diverse representation, the attendees
have the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of careers
available in health care.
The week usually concludes with tours of hospitals
and healthcare facilities where the academy participants can see
the careers they learned about in action.
