Department of Labor and Regulation

Unemployment Insurance

Please note: All South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation offices will be closed Thursday, July 4 in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.

Unemployment insurance provides temporary financial assistance for people who have lost their jobs, through no fault of their own, until they find other employment. South Dakota's unemployment insurance program is financed by employers through payroll taxes; workers do not contribute to this plan.

Unemployment Insurance (UI) services are provided through the following sections:

UI Benefits - Individuals file a claim, weekly certification or an appeal.

UI Tax - Employers register to determine liability and file quarterly wage reports.

New Hire Reporting Center - Employers report newly hired employees as required by law.

UI Overpayment and Fraud - Prevent and detect benefit overpayments and fraud.
